Russia: 'Better to be a Tatar in Crimea then a Russian in Lithuania' - French delegate

Russian Federation, Sevastopol
July 29, 2016 at 18:46 GMT +00:00 · Published

A delegation of French politicians met with the Prime Minister of Crimea Sergei Aksyonov in Sevastopol on Friday. During the meeting they discussed the questions of Crimean Tatars and missing people in Crimea. Thierry Mariani, a member of the French National Assembly, and the head of the delegation, said that the region had made progress on both issues.

“I think it's also an issue of propaganda, because, in my own opinion, it is better to be a Tatar in Crimea then a Russian in Lithuania," he stated.

Aksyonov meanwhile said that he hoped to strengthen relations with French politicians in the future. “Our French friends proved that they are real allies who tell the truth and after these visits I am also ready to see breakthroughs," said Aksyonov.

Earlier in the day the French delegation visited the Krasnyi Memorial Complex in Crimea's Simferopol Region, which, during WWII, was the largest Nazi death camp on the peninsula. It is expected that the delegation will take part in Russian Navy Day celebrations in Sevastopol on Sunday, July 31.
