Poland: French Catholic leader comments on 'barbaric' church attack
Spokesman for the French Episcopate, Reverand Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, gave a statement on the attack in a church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray which saw a priest get killed in by two assailants, Tuesday. Dumas was speaking at a press conference in Krakow, ahead of Pope Francis' visit to Poland.
"It is very easy to fall for vengeance and anger and those feelings can catch us all tonight", he said, before stating, "it's not only Catholics that are affected by this barbaric act, it's the whole French community." Dumas asserted his belief that the attack is "a continuation of other attacks that have happened in our country and other countries."
An anti-terror squad rushed to a church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, northern France, on Tuesday morning, after two assailants, armed with knives, took a priest, two nuns and two worshippers hostage. The priest has been killed.
A police operation, by the Research and Intervention Brigade, to besiege the church and rescue the hostages concluded at 10:45 local time (08:45 GMT), with the death of the two hostage takers.
