France: Hollande says killers of Normandy priest claimed to be IS

France, Saint-Etienne du Rouvray
July 26, 2016 at 13:11 GMT -00:00 · Published

French President Francois Hollande visited Saint-Etienne du Rouvray, Normandy, on Tuesday afternoon in the wake of the deadly attack on an 84-year old priest in the morning.

In the latest of a string of violent acts across Europe, the attack saw Catholic priest Rev. Jacques Hamel, stabbed to death and four other people taken hostage when a church was attacked by two men.

Speaking to the press outside, Hollande said that the killers claimed to be from the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL): "I came with the Interior Minister to express the whole nation's solidarity with Saint-Etienne du Rouvray. I am standing next to its mayor who has been terribly afflicted by the cowardly assassination of the parish priest by two terrorists claiming themselves to be members of Daesh."

Hollande went on to add: "We are under strain, once more, because the threat is really high. And it remains really high after all that we have been though these last days and even the last years. We're facing a group, Daesh, who have declared war on us. We have to fight this war by all means with respect to the rule of law, which makes us a democracy."

The two attackers were shot dead by police. One hostage is said to be wounded and in critical condition.
