France: Hollande extends State of Emergency after Nice terrorist attack kills 77
French President Francois Hollande announced that Paris will extend its State of Emergency during a press conference in Paris, in the early hours of Friday, after at least 80 people were killed and 100 injured during an attack in Nice on Thursday night, when a truck ploughed into a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations.
"Once more horror has hit France. Tonight in Nice one truck plowed into a crowd gathered to watch the fireworks of July 14th in order to kill and massacre. We mourn now 77 victims, some of which were children," stated Hollande, adding that "We have to do everything to fight terrorism."
"We are relying on the Operation Sentinelle, which will allow us to mobilise ten thousand military personnel on top of the ones already in place," continued the French President, stating "I have also decided that the State of Emergency that was supposed to end on the 26th of July, will continue for another three months. Parliament will discuss the measure next week. Nothing will stop us from our intention to fight terrorism, and we will continue our operations in Syria and Iraq."
According to witnesses, the truck drove into the crowd as spectators were watching the Bastille Day fireworks display. The truck was reportedly loaded with weapons and grenades. The driver, who has been reported as French of Tunisian origin, was shot and killed by security forces.
