South Sudan: UN peacekeepers guard thousands of IDPs despite ceasefire

South Sudan, Juba

The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) reported that a ceasefire is being maintained, despite some sporadic gunfire, Wednesday, as UN peacekeepers continued to safeguard thousands of internally displaced people in Juba.

Thousands have fled the fighting which broke out last week between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and First Vice-President Riek Machar, forcing around 5,000 people to seek shelter at the United Nations (UN) bases in the city. It is estimated that 36,000 people have been displaced by the fighting. Most of the affected people are women and children.

Humanitarian partners are assisting wounded civilians within the UN sites and providing health services at the clinic in a compound. Although the humanitarian situation is serious and the needs are immense, the current security situation has limited their ability to reach the populations in need. Peacekeepers have conducted a number of short patrols in Juba.
