USA: Helicopters and tear gas dog anti-police brutality demo in Phoenix
Police in riot gear used tear gas and pepper spray, with reports of rubber bullets, against around 1,000 people who gathered in Phoenix, Arizona state, on Friday night, following the police killings of black men in Baton Rouge and suburban St. Paul.
People chanted "black lives matter" and "hands up, don't shoot" as they marched. Freeway ramps were closed as demonstrators moved toward the roads.
The protesters were rallying against the police-involved deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, both African-American men, in Louisiana and Minnesota in the past week. The protest was organised under the umbrella of the “Black Lives Matter” but not officially recognised by the president of the movement.
