USA: Protest organisers offer condolences to Dallas shootout victims' families

United States, Dallas

The organisers of Thursday's deadly protest condemned the actions that led to the death of five police officers, while speaking at a press conference in Dallas on Friday.

The President of the Next Generation Action Network, Rev. Dominique Alexander stated that the protest intended to bring awareness to police brutality, following the recent killings of African-Americans Alton Sterling and Philando Castle at the hands of police. Another organiser of the protest Dr. Rev. Jeff Hood insisted that the rally was never intended to be violent.

Alexander reiterated Obama's speech condemning the attacks, "because black lives matter, it does not mean that blue lives, do not matter," while offering his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. The organisation confirmed that they did not know the gunman, who has been identified as 25-year-old Army veteran Micah Xavier Johnson.

Another protest organiser, Jeff Hood, rejected claims of intended violence at the rally, saying "There was never a moment where I felt like there was even a hint of violence."

Sniper rounds ripped through the Dallas night, late on Thursday, killing 5 officers and wounding at least 6 more during the protest. Police reports indicate that two snipers fired multiple shots at officers from an elevated position in the city centre. A Facebook community dubbed the 'Black Power Political Organization' has reportedly claimed responsibility for the shootings.
