Poland: Obama on police killings: "Not just a black issue, this is an American issue",
President Barack Obama commented on two recent police killings of black men in the US during an address delivered in Warsaw on Thursday evening. The two incidents occurred in Louisiana, where Alton Sterling was shot outside a Baton Rouge convenience store, and Minnesota, where Philando Castile was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop.
Footage of both incidents were uploaded online where they have provoked widespread anger and shock. The officers involved in both incidents were white.
"When incidents like this occur there's a big chunk of our fellow citizenry that feels as if because of the color of their skin, they are not being treated the same. And that hurts," said Obama. "This is not just a black issue, it's not just a Hispanic issue, this is an American issue that we should all care about. All fair-minded people should be concerned," he added.
Obama is in Poland for a NATO summit which is to take place this weekend.
