France: Brexit campaigners 'jumping ship when things get difficult' - Juncker

France, Strasbourg
July 5, 2016 at 10:32 GMT -00:00 · Published

President of the European Council Donald Tusk, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker alongside President of the National Front Marine Le Pen participated in a plenary session at the European Parliament offices in Strasbourg, Tuesday. Former UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage, who resigned on Monday following the Brexit result, did now come to the assembly, with deputy leader Paul Nuttall taking his place.

Tusk stated that the UK won't gain access to the EU's single market if it doesn't accept the EU's so-called Freedoms provisions, especially the freedom of movement. The statement came following Wednesday's European summit on Brexit where 27 EU leaders "made it clear that access to the single market means acceptance of all four freedoms including the freedom of movement." "We will not sell off our freedoms and there will be no single market 'a la carte," he said.

Tusk went on to stress that "there will be no negotiations of any kind until the UK formally notifies its intention to withdraw from the EU."

Juncker accused the main Brexit campaigners Boris Johnson and Farage of stepping down when things got difficult. "They are retro nationalists rather than patriots because patriots don't jump ship when things get difficult, they stay," he said.

Le Pen hit back at Brexit detractors, saying that despite EU officials predicting that "European civilisation would collapse, the stock markets would fall … none of this has happened."
