Israel: Relatives of dead IDF soldiers protest Turkish aid package to Gaza

Israel, Karem Shalom
July 3, 2016 at 19:33 GMT +00:00 · Published

Dozens of Israeli protesters gathered at the Karem Shalom border crossing, Sunday, in a bid to block the delivery of an 11,000-ton humanitarian aid package from Turkey to the Gaza Strip.

Among the protesters were the parents of Erez Sagi, an Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) soldier who was killed by mortar fire from Gaza while serving at an outpost during Israel’s 2014 military campaign in Gaza, Operation Protective Edge.

Speaking to journalists his father denounced the aid package and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "We want to block it because we have a friend who was kidnapped by Hamas during Operation Protective Edge and he [his remains] is still not back to Israel," said another protester, a friend of IDF soldier Oron Shaul, who also lost his life in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge and whose remains have not yet been recovered.

The ship, named 'Lady Leyla' arrived at the Israeli port of Ashdod carrying 2,000 tons of rice from the Turkish Grain Board, packs of sugar supplied by the Turkish Red Cross, as well as at least 10,000 toys and 10,000 packages of food and aid for children residing in the Gaza strip. The move came after Israel and Turkey signed a so-called reconciliation agreement, Tuesday, after six years of bilateral enmity between the two countries.

Tel Aviv and Ankara approved an agreement on restoring their relations during a meeting in the Turkish Foreign Ministry on June 28, swearing it in last Tuesday. Diplomatic ties between Turkey and Israel were suspended after Israeli troops opened fire on Turkish aid ship 'Mavi Marmara' in international waters, after the flotilla tried to breach Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip in 2010. Nine Turks were on board the flotilla were killed.

In the agreement the countries have agreed that the families of those killed will be compensated, and a formal apology will be given, assuring a restoration of Turkey and Israel's formal diplomatic relationship. Several Turkish infrastructure projects will also be granted in Gaza, with heightened trade expected to take place between Ankara and Tel Aviv.
