Bangladesh: 20 foreign nationals stabbed to death in IS-claimed attack - Army

Twenty foreign nationals were found stabbed to death following a deadly hostage situation and consequent military raid in Dhaka, Director of Military Operations for the Bangladesh Army Bangladeshi Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury confirmed from the capital, Saturday.

Chowdhury made the announcement after security forces reportedly killed six of the seven gunmen in a morning raid on the Holey Artisan Bakery cafe, after the militants held off police for some 12 hours.

The armed militant group stormed the cafe at around 20:45 local time (14:45 GMT), later exchanging heavy gunfire with security personnel and taking hostages, most of whom were foreign nationals.

Chowdhury confirmed that the hostage situation had ended following this morning’s raid, stating that one of the gunmen was taken alive, with 13 hostages rescued.

Two police officers were killed during the attack and consequent hostage situation, both succumbing to gunshot wounds. Detective Police Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Nazmul Alam confirmed the deaths, adding that around 40 people were wounded by both gunshots and shrapnel. Some 30 of those injured are thought to be police officers.

Despite the so-called Islamic State (IS, previously ISIS/ISIL) claiming the attack, officials have yet to confirm the militant Wahabi group's connection to the assault.
