Cuba: First US operated hotel opens in Havana

A new hotels, owned and operated by US based hotel company Starwood, opened its doors in Havana, on Tuesday, indicating another step towards restoring economic and diplomatic relations between US and Cuba.

Formerly the Quinta Avenida hotel, situated in a luxury Miramar neighbourhood, changed its name to the Starwood's 'Four Points by Sheraton'. After three years belonging to Cuba’s tourism company Gaviota, the hotel will become the first one in Cuba that is managed by an American company.

The agreement that allowed Starwood to manage the hotel was signed last March, just before US President Barack Obama arrived on the island for an historic visit.

Rooms in the hotel are already available for booking, starting from $230 (€207.8) per night.

Cuba has received 1.5 million tourists in the first four months of 2016, up 13.5 percent from a year earlier. This is due to an increase in visitors from the US as well as Cuba’s traditional markets of Canada, Germany, and the UK.
