UK: Legislation for 2nd IndyRef to be prepared immediately - Nicola Sturgeon

United Kingdom, Edinburgh
June 28, 2016 at 14:57 GMT +00:00 · Published

Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, stated that Scotland should start preparing for legislation on a second independence referendum in the first sitting of the Scottish Parliament since the results of the UK's referendum on EU membership, in Edinburgh on Tuesday.

"Based on the very clear result in Scotland, if we were to be removed from the EU, it would be against the will of our people. That would be democratically unacceptable" said the SNP leader.

The First Minster went on to state that: "everything must be on the table to protect our place in Europe, including a second Independence Referendum and to ensure that the option of holding a referendum within the time frame of UK negotiations on leaving the EU is viable, we will prepare the legislation now."

Turning to the Conservative members of the Scottish Parliament, she added: "It would be ironic, and I think deeply regrettable, if the party that has put us into this unfortunate position ended up as the only one standing in the way of our efforts to resolve it." This statement received a round of applause.

Sturgeon and the SNP stunned the main political parties in the recent general elections, winning 56 out of 59 seats in Scotland and taking 50 percent of the Scottish vote, making the SNP the third largest party in the House of Commons.

Scotland's First Minister will head to Brussels to hold meetings with Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, and discuss the country's future in the EU.
