Belgium: EU won’t start Brexit talks without initiation from UK – Tusk

Belgium, Brussels
June 28, 2016 at 11:57 GMT +00:00 · Published

President of the European Commission Donald Tusk stated that "it is the British government who initiates the process of exit from the EU," during a statement to press in Brussels, Tuesday.

Tusk explained that "this is the only legal way we have," adding that "everyone should be aware of this fact."

"We have precise procedures, we have already well planned. But I would like to underline very, very clearly without the notification from the UK we will not start any negotiations on the divorce process or on future relations."

Earlier in the week, ministers from the six EU founder states called on the UK to immediately trigger the Article 50 clause, which would precipitate negotiations on a British exit from the Union. Cameron announced that he would not initiate the article, instead leaving the task to his predecessor, who is expected to be in place by autumn at the latest.

Last Friday, the Electoral Commission reported that the Leave campaign had clinched a win in the UK EU referendum, with some 52 percent of the electorate voting for Brexit from an estimated 72 percent voter turnout.
