UK: Havering, East London, announces Leave vote in EU referendum

United Kingdom, Havering

Havering's Counting Officer, Andrew Blake-Herbert, announced the results of the UK's 'Brexit' referendum in Havering, east London, Thursday morning, where there was clear result in favour of leaving the European Union.

"The total number of ballot papers counted was 139,175. The number of votes cast in favour of remain a member of the European Union was 42,201. The number of votes cast in favour of leave the European Union was 97,885," he stated. The official continued also said that 89 ballot papers were rejected for various reasons.

Opinion polls have flip-flopped between both sides for the duration of the campaign. After pro-Remain Labour MP Jo Cox was murdered, the Remain campaign looked to have an edge on the ‘Brexit’ campaigners; however, early referendum night reports show the Leave campaign to have clinched a win.

There is mounting pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron to resign as leader of the Conservative Party in the wake of the result, after he campaigned to remain part of the European Union. He is expected to make a statement later this morning.
