
Germany: Armed man killed after taking hostages in cinema complex - officials
At least 25 people were injured by police tear gas when a masked man with a possible weapon was shot dead by German special police after he stormed a cinema and took hostages, in Viernheim, near Frankfurt, on Thursday afternoon.
The man stormed the cinema complex, where he reportedly fired into the air with an object that appeared to resemble a gun. According to police sources, the police deployed CS gas in order to capture the attacker, injuring around 25 to 50 people who remained in the cinema, before shooting the man dead.
Although some witnesses reported that the attacker fired into the air and had a munitions belt over his shoulder, it is not yet clear if he was carrying a real weapon. According to German media, German security services do not believe the man is linked to any terrorist group.
