Brazil: Romario announces his bid to be mayor of Rio
Former Brazilian World Cup winning footballer and current senator Romario de Souza Faria announced that he is running for the mayorship of Rio de Janeiro, in a press conference in the city, Monday.
"From today on I am officially a pre-candidate for mayor of our wonderful city of Rio de Janeiro. I have only five years and a half of experience on the political scenario. Those five and a half years helped me to learn a lot," said the former FIFA World Player of the Year.
Romario warned that "Many negative things will appear in my political life," before adding "I tell you that I have no attachment with anyone."
Romario has been a senator for the Brazilian Socialist Party since 2010, when he was elected to the lower house of the national parliament. The Rio de Janeiro mayoral elections will be held on October 2.
