USA: Mayor urges families to contact authorities following Orlando shooting

United States, Orlando, Florida
June 13, 2016 at 16:54 GMT +00:00 · Published

The Mayor of Orange County Teresa Jacobs urged families who suspect that their loved ones may have at the 'Pulse' nightclub to get in contact with authorities, during an address to press outside the Beardell Senior Centre, in Orlando, Monday.

"We have a very small number of victims who we've identified but we have not found their next-of-kin," stated Jacobs.

Victim's families, friends and loved ones have gathered at the centre as they await news and receive support following Sunday's mass shooting.

Fifty people were killed and 53 injured in a shooting at the LGBT nightclub 'Pulse' in Orlando on Sunday, with Mayor Buddy Dyer confirming the numbers during a press briefing later in the day. The shooting is the deadliest attack in the US since 9/11.

Omar Siddiqui Mateen, a US citizen of Afghan descent living in Port St. Lucie, has been identified as the culprit. He was killed during the SWAT operation at the club.

Mateen reportedly claimed links to the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) before carrying out the attack, but officials have stated that the militant group's relations with the individual could be tenuous.
