USA: Orlando shooter declared 'allegiance to the Islamic State' - police

United States, Orlando
June 13, 2016 at 14:56 GMT -00:00 · Published

The suspect in the deadly mass shooting at the 'Pulse' LGBT nightclub in Orlando declared "allegiance to the Islamic State" during the time of the hostage situation, John W. Mina, City of Orlando chief of police, said during a press conference in the city on Monday. However, he didn't elaborate on what the shooter had said, and denied reports that the gunman had "laughed" during the negotiation process.

Speaking at the same press briefing, Florida Governor Rick Scott said he had asked US President Barack Obama for permission to declare a state of emergency for the state of Florida.

Paul Wysopal, FBI special agent in charge of Tampa Division Law, meanwhile clarified the number of dead. "What some people have been giving out at some point in time was that the shooter was included in the number at 50 [dead]," he stated, before clarifying that "there are 49 victims, we don't really count the shooter as a victim. So that's how you got the 49; 48 of those have been identified at present."

Fifty people were killed, including the gunman, and 53 injured in the shooting in Orlando on Sunday, with Mayor Buddy Dyer confirming the numbers during a press briefing later in the day. The shooting is the deadliest attack in the US since 9/11.

Omar Siddiqui Mateen, a US citizen of Afghan descent living in Port St. Lucie, has been identified as the suspect. He was killed during the SWAT operation at the club.

Officials have stated that IS' links with the individual could be tenuous.
