USA: Orlando shooting an 'act of terror' says Obama
US President Barack Obama described the Orlando nightclub shooting which has left at least 50 people dead as "an act of terror", speaking in Washington D.C, Sunday.
Obama said that "today as Americans, we grieve the brutal murder - the horrific massacre - of dozens of innocent people. We pray for their families, who are grasping for answers with broken hearts. We stand with the people of Orlando, who have endured a terrible attack on their city."
He went on to say that "although it's still early in the investigation, we know enough to say that this was an act of terror and an act of hate, and as Americans we are united in grief, in outrage, and in resolve to defend our people." He also confirmed that "the FBI is on the scene and leading the investigation in partnership with local law enforcement."
In the early hours of Sunday, a gunman opened fire in Pulse, an LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida. At least 50 people have been declared dead while a further 53 are injured, many of whom are in critical condition. The shooting is the deadliest attack in the US since 9/11.
Omar Siddiqui Mateen, a U.S. citizen of Afghan descent living in Port St. Lucie, has been identified as the attacker.
