Bulgaria: US Destroyer with new missile system hits Varna ahead of Back Sea mission
The US Navy's destroyer USS Porter docked in Varna, Thursday, ahead of its support mission in the Black Sea where it will assist NATO allies in Eastern Europe. The USS Porter (DDG-78) was recently fitted with a new missile system, reportedly in a bid to protect against the so-called "Russian threat", according to the US Naval Institute.
The ship has a crew of 300 people, with 100 of those being women. It's equipped with a Tomahawk missiles and Guard system. In March, the ship became the first US Navy vessel to trial the SeaRAM missile defense system, created to counter "a new Russian threat," in the words of the military association the US Naval Institute.
Speaking after arriving in the port, Captain of the Destroyer Andria Slough said that their visit is part of a "routine operation" in the Black and Baltic seas and that they have enjoyed a professional relationship with "our Russian counterparts" in logistical cooperation. "We hope to enhance regional security throughout the region" added the captain.
