Moscow specialists presented unearthed artefacts discovered at an archaeological site on the grounds of the former Rossia Hotel in central Moscow, Wednesday, one of the oldest parts of the Russian capital.

The location on the banks of the Moscow River just a few hundred metres downstream from the Kremlin is considered one of the oldest in the city. According to the findings presented by the Metropolitan Archaeological Bureau in Moscow, the area used to host a grand market dating back to the fourteenth century, which housed more than 1,500 stalls.

The Head of the Moscow Metropolitan Archaeological Bureau Konstantin Voronin noted "Moscow had strong relations with the East and Western Europe." According to Voronin, among most interesting findings is a Swedish coin from the early eighteenth century, which he believes demonstrates "active contacts between Moscow and Western Europe in the era of Ivan the Terrible, and beyond."

Demolition of the Rossia Hotel commenced in 2013, following the proposition of the Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2012 to build a new park. The new park, which will sit on the historically charged site, will be known as the Zaryadye Park and is due to open by September 2017, offering visitors to experience four typical Russian landscape zones: the steppe, forest, tundra and meadow.
