Germany: Merkel spokesperson explains White Paper listing Russia as national threat

Germany, Berlin
June 6, 2016 at 13:06 GMT -00:00 · Published

Spokesperson for Chancellor Angela Merkel Steffen Seibert held on press conference, in Berlin on Monday, following the announcement of a new white paper, which lists Russia as one of the top ten security threats to the country.

Russia has been placed alongside the threats of 'international terrorism' and 'climate change' in the 80-page document, which cites involvement in the Ukraine crisis and the country's growing military forces as reason for its inclusion.

Seibert stated that "it cannot be denied that concerning Crimea, Russia has committed a breach of international law, while concerning eastern Ukraine, it has contributed to a destabilisation of this region."

Despite this Seibert noted that "we want a good relationship with Russia," adding that there is still a "will to work together with Russia."

Since the Ukrainian crisis of 2014, Russia has had strained relations with the EU, who have introduced several rounds of economic sanctions against Russia.
