Brazil: Rio's mayor inaugurates first Olympic tram
Mayor Eduardo Paes inaugurated the Light Rail Vehicle (VLT) Carioca and the Public Promenade of Rio Branco, in Rio de Janeiro, Sunday.
The two great works are set to be fully operational for this year's Olympic Games, taking place in Rio de Janeiro between August 5 and August 21, and which as claimed will significantly transform the mobility and ambience of the city center.
According to local sources, VLT will have a 28-kilometres (17-miles) network and will integrate the city center, the Santos Dumont Airport and the Rio-Niteroi Barca to the port area of the city. The system is expected to connect all means of transport that go from the city center to the port, withdrawing at least 60 percent of buses and 15 percent of cars circulating in the city center.
Acting President of Brazil Michel Temer, who entered office on May 12 after Dilma Rousseff's suspension, was not seen at the inauguration of the VLT tram, reportedly because of the risk of erupting protests.
