Around 2,000 people gathered at the Cotxeres de Sants centre in Barcelona on Thursday to see former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis speak alongside Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau.

The rally, which was so popular that around 200 people were forced to watch from outside, was organised by citizen platform 'Barcelona en Comu', whose spokesperson is Colau.

While addressing the attendees, Varoufakis called Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy a "spoilt child" and criticized his austerity policies. "Mariano Rajoy goes to Brussels after years of imposing austerity in this country, then claiming success and he realises that the numbers do not adapt. And what does he do? Like a spoilt child he goes to Brussels and asks for a permission to violate the rules," he explained.

Varoufakis went on to stress that in order to "democratise Europe we have to democratize our neighbourhoods." According to the Greek politician, in order to achieve progress with regards to health care, social security and pensions, it is important to act "simultaneously" both on a regional and European level.
