Greece: Putin talks South Stream project, US missile shield during Athens visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a joint press conference with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Athens, Friday. During the press conference, Putin addressed a range of issues including the suspension of the South Stream gas pipeline, Russian-Turkish relations and the US missile defence system in Romania.

Commenting on the suspended South Stream project, Putin said: "Under the pressure of the United States and the European Commission, the government of Bulgaria basically avoided the implementation of this project." Russia was forced to cancel the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline via the Black Sea to Bulgaria after the European Commission urged Sofia to halt works on the project.

Discussing the recently activated US missile shield in Romania, Putin noted that the defence system would have a negative effect on economic cooperation, before adding: "The United States unilaterally withdrew from the missile defence treaty and thus basically began to undermine the foundation of international security."

Addressing concerns regarding Russian-Turkish relations, the Russian leader stated: "We have not heard their apologies or their willingness to pay damages. We have heard their desire to resume the relations. We want to resume the relations as well. But it was not us who destroyed them. We have done everything for decades to take Russian-Turkish relations to the unprecedented level of partnership and friendship."
