Iraq: Soldiers prepare for major attack to liberate Fallujah

Iraq, Fallujah

Soldiers, militiamen and vehicles from the anti-Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) coalition forces gathered near the Iraqi city of Fallujah, Wednesday, as they prepare for a major attack on the city.

One commander of the People’s Militia, Hadi al-Amiri, said that “we concentrated our power on three main areas” which were near the concrete factory and the Shakhabi-1 and Shikhabi-2 districts. Winning control of these areas was seen as crucial before the main attack to liberate Fallujah is launched.

Fallujah, about 40 miles (78km) west of Baghdad, was the first Iraqi city to be taken by the Islamic State in January 2014. Despite a score of territorial defeats, the Islamic State still controls large patches of the Iraqi territory in the country's north and west, including its second largest city of Mosul, gaining access to huge oil wells, with whose petrol the IS could be trading with some countries in order to get funds.
