Iraq: Funeral held for anti-govt. protesters killed in Green Zone demo
Hundreds of people came out on the streets of Baghdad to participate in Saturday's funeral ceremony for anti-government protesters who died during clashes with security forces in the capital's heavily fortified Green Zone.
Coffins of the dead protesters were paraded through the streets as people chanted anti-government slogans.
At least four anti-government protesters were killed, with over 90 injured injured, after security forces in Baghdad's Green Zone reportedly opened fire on demonstrators, Friday. Authorities allegedly started firing after the protesters stormed the Green Zone for the second time in two weeks.
The demonstrators first broke into the Green Zone, a heavily guarded area which hosts government buildings and a number of foreign embassies, on May 1 following a week of protests outside the parliament over what protesters see as a political deadlock, calling for Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to temper infighting between factions within his government.
