Turkey: Binali Yildirim set to become AKP leader and new Turkish PM
Current Turkish Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication Binali Yildirim was announced as sole candidate for the leadership of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) during an AKP convention in Ankara, Thursday, and is likely to become the country's new prime minister due to the fact that incumbent Ahmet Davutoglu is stepping down.
During the convention, AKP Deputy Chair and spokesperson Omer Celik stated that "our esteemed friend Binali Yildirim was nominated by a huge consensus within the party."
"I want to say that I am expressing my appreciation to the party members, to my friends and the party organisation for nominating me as a candidate for the general chairmanship at the congress," said Yildirim in his speech, promising that terrorism will no longer occupy Turkey's agenda.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had announced that he would be stepping down in early May during a press conference following an AKP Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting in Ankara.
