Russia: There is no 'Plan B' for Syrian crisis - FM's Zakharova
Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stressed that there is no 'Plan B' for Syria, at a press conference during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) - Russia Summit in Sochi, Thursday.
She said that no such decision was made, "nor was it discussed seriously by the sides" during the fifth ministerial meeting of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) that had taken place in Vienna, May 17. "We couldn't help but note the declarations of Ankara that Turkey, like no other country in the world, is engaged in the fight against terrorism as well as the reports that have appeared in the media, citing Saudi Arabian officials about some kind of forthcoming notorious 'Plan B' on Syria," she said, explaining the background to her refutation of a 'Plan B' on Syria.
Speaking of the situation in Syria, Zakharova noted "significant progress" achieved by the Syrian authorities in providing humanitarian access to the besieged regions. Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the delays in the UN convoys are "largely caused by the shelling performed by the illegal armed groups and concerns over the lives of the UN personnel."
