Russia: Yacht and crew detained by North Korea arrive home

Russian Federation, Vladivostok
May 17, 2016 at 19:49 GMT +00:00 · Published

The Russian yacht 'the Elfin' docked safely in Vladivostok on Tuesday after it was detained on May 13 by unidentified North Korean sailors before being handed over to that country's coast guard. The incident happened in the Sea of Japan where, according to the crew members, two ships without markings or flags surrounded the Elfin.

A member of the Elfin crew, Sergei Domovidov, said “this was piracy because it is difficult to call such an action a civilised one. They were not the military." According to Domovidov “they did not want to contact us by radio, although they had the chance. There were no negotiations."

"They acted aggressively right up to the point where the boat hull was cracking and damaged the boat," he added.

The yacht was towed into the port of Kimchaek, about 230 km (142.9 miles) from the land border with Russia, where they were handed over to North Korea's coast guard. Russia's Consul General in Chongjin met with the North Hamyong Province's Department for External Relations over the Elfin yacht's detention on the following day. The crew of the Elfin were then released having spent around 24 hours in custody. The North Korean government explained that the detention of the yacht had been the result of a misunderstanding.

At the time of the incident, the vessel was en route from Busan, South Korea, where it had taken part in an international sailing competition.
