The construction of the US Aegis Ashore missile defence complex was officially began on Friday, in Redzikowo airbase, near Slupsk, northern Poland.
Polish, US and NATO officials attended the ceremony, symbolically digging earth together to mark the beginning of facility's construction.
One of the officials in attendance was the Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz, who, following the ceremony, stated that "The Russians do not understand the modern world, do not understand our actions, they do not understand that every country has the right to defend itself.”
This facility is intended to be the first permanent US-NATO military facility in Poland.
