Romania: NATO defence system 'not about Russia,' Stoltenberg, US MoD, and Romanian PM stress

Romania, Deveselu

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg tried to dispel concerns that the military body's newly launched anti-missile site in Romania did not pose a threat to Russian security during an inauguration ceremony for the project in Deveselu, Thursday.

Stoltenberg as well as Romanian Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos and US Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work assured press repeatedly that the system is "not directed against Russia." "It is purely defensive and it will not undermine Russia's strategic deters," Stoltenberg said claiming that "geography and physics make that impossible."

Stoltenberg finished his statement by saying "our system is designed to tackle threats from outside the Euro-Atlantic area." "We will continue to engage in dialogue with Russia when and where we can ... Keeping chance for communication open is even more important in times of tensions," he said.

Moscow has slammed NATO's expanding defence shield, calling it a threat to security, and a violation of a key international treaty. "The creation of a European and global missile defence shield has an adverse effect on strategic stability," Mikhail Ulyanov, head of the Russian foreign ministry's department for proliferation and arms control issues, said on Wednesday.

NATO's 'Aegis Ashore' missile system forms part of a network of global interceptors and sensors, with its command centre in Germany.
