Germany: DefSec Carter says US military bolstering its presence in Europe
American Defence Secretary Ash Carter commented on US military deployments in Europe from Stuttgart, Tuesday, as he attended the change of command ceremony of the United States European Command (EUCOM).
"We are prepared every day for any kind of circumstances here in Europe, but we are improving our forces and that is the reason for the addition of an American brigade on a rotational but persistent, present basis," Carter stated during his speech.
Discussing the US military's presence in the Baltic states, the US defence secretary highlighted that "the Baltic countries are NATO allies" before adding that "we have a commitment which we are prepared to honour to defend the territory of the Baltic states and to deter aggression."
Meanwhile chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Corps Gen. Joe Dunford, stressed that any deployment of US forces in Libya would only came "at the invitation of the government of national accord." He said that US representatives would "meet with the government of national accord to see what requirements may exist from a security perspective and from an operations perspective, and so we're already working very closely with the GNA to determine what assistance they may require."
The change of command ceremony took place in the morning with Army General Curtis Michael Scaparrotti assuming command of EUCOM from Air Force General Philip Mark Breedlove.
