Brazil: Pres. Rousseff rallies her supporters on May Day ahead of impeachment vote
Around 90,000 supporters of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff gathered at Vale do Anhangabau in Sao Paolo to celebrate Labour Day on Sunday.
The rally was devoted not only to International Workers' Day, but also held as a protest against the impeachment process against Rousseff which protesters believe is a coup by her opponents. Rousseff gave a speech in front of her supporters, saying that she had "never used public money for [her] own profit" and "never stole money from the Brazilian people." She also reportedly announced tax cuts and more social housing.
On April 17, two-thirds of the 513 delegates in Brazil's lower chamber voted in favour of impeaching Rousseff. The matter will now be voted upon in the Senate by May 17 and if the upper house decides Rousseff should stand trial she could be suspended for 180 days. In the event that Rousseff is found guilty by a two-thirds Senate majority, she will be removed from office.
