
Turkey: Police kill 1 as May Day protests escalate in Istanbul
One May Day protester was killed after Turkish police in full riot gear used water cannon and tear gas against protesters at the Bakirkoy Bazaar in Istanbul, Sunday on International Workers' Day. The protester was reportedly killed after he was struck with high-pressure water cannon.
Trade unions, opposition parties and political groups decided to hold the Mayday march in the Bakirkoy district instead of Taksim for security reasons. Groups were allowed to enter the Bakirkoy district from check points set up by the police. Police helicopters were reportedly following the event above the square.
Multiple non-governmental organisations and syndicate members started to arrive to the Bakirkoy Bazaar area on Sunday, for International Workers' Day celebrations. Republican People's Party (CHP), People's Democratic Party (HDP), Worker's Democracy Party (İDP), Revolutionary Worker's Party (DİP), Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK), Confederation of Public Employees Trade Unions (KESK), Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), Turkish Medical Association (TTB) and many syndicates and political party members took part in the march to Bakirkoy Bazaar.
