
Georgia: Suspected uranium traffickers detained in Kobuleti
Five people were detained under the suspicion of illegally selling uranium, following a joint operation by Counter-Intelligence Department and Special Operations Department of the Georgian State Security Forces in Kobuleti, Wednesday.
The detained group allegedly attempted to sell the radioactive substance for $3 million (€2,644,579) from an apartment in Kobuleti. Initial analysis of the confiscated samples says that the substance weighs 1,665 grams, and that it contains two radioactive isotopes: Uranium 238 and Uranium 235. Both of them are considered highly hazardous.
Police officials stated that an investigation has been launched. If charged, the group faces five to ten years of imprisonment.
