Turkey: Scuffles erupt during Constitutional Committee meeting
An argument broke out between deputies during a meeting of the Constitutional Committee of the Turkish Parliament in Ankara, Thursday.
The committee had gathered to discuss a proposal from the ruling Justice and Development Party on removing immunity from the deputies. The move is expected to open up processes for trying pro-Kurdish legislators on terror charge, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan allegedly accusing the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) of being directly linked to the outlawed Kurdistan's Workers' Party (PKK).
The session was chaired by the ruling party’s Istanbul Deputy Mustafa Sentop. Thirty deputies from HDP said the location should be changed, since it was too small, and that the press should be removed from the hall.
After the dispute, Sentop ordered members of the press to leave the meeting room.
