Russia: OSCE needs to 'rethink crisis management' approach - Zannier

Russian Federation, Moscow
April 28, 2016 at 10:11 GMT +00:00 · Published

Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Secretary General Lamberto Zannier admitted that situation concerning the Ukraine crisis is "a worrying picture," during the Moscow International Conference on Security at the Radisson Royal Hotel in the Russian capital, Thursday.

Zannier said that "the hybrid nature of the crisis has shown the limit of traditional crisis management tools," adding that the OSCE need to "rethink our crisis management approach." He went on saying, "We need to look for new ways to reduce tension and to prevent crisis or even in adverted incidents from turning into conflict."

The OSCE chief said that a solution can only be achieved through "careful balancing or strength in multilateralism and traditional political leadership," adding that "the ultimate responsibility" lies with the local actors, "if they fail then we all fails."

The fifth International Conference on Security runs in Moscow until April 28. The event brings together more than 500 high-ranking Russian and international politicians from at least 80 countries including three deputy prime ministers, 20 defence ministers, 15 chiefs of staff, 10 international organisations and military delegations. The fight against international terrorism, security issues in the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and the European regions as well as military cooperation are expected to top the agenda of this year's conference.
