Mongolia: 1,500-yr-old mummy sporting 'Adidas trainers' found in Mongolia

After Mongolian researchers unearthed a 1,500-year-old female mummy wearing red boots with stripes, resembling the emblem of sports manufacturer Adidas, experts from the Khovd Museum presented their discovery, Monday.

The archaeologists are excited by what they believe is one the first almost complete Turkic burial sites in Central Asia at the high of 2,800 metres [nearly 9,200 feet] in Mongolia’s Altai Mountains. However, the discovery sparked international online interest for an entirely different reason, with commenters speculating about whether or not the woman was a time traveller because of her ‘Adidas’ shoes.

Experts have since clarified that the Adidas claims, saying they come from the fact the woman was wearing footwear with three white bands to hold them in place.

Due to a year-round temperature of about zero degrees in the cave, the find was in good condition. In addition to the human remains, an entire horse with a saddle and bridle was discovered, alongside ancient clothes, a clay vase, a bowl, and an iron kettle.

The first Turk people, who developed their own alphabets, language and symbols system, first settled in Central Asia and Siberia in the sixth century BC. Modern Turkic people inhabit a huge swathe of land from Asia (Russia, China, Uzbekistan), the Middle-East (Iran), Turkey and eastern Europe.
