USA: Pro-Rousseff protesters rally outside UN HQ

United States, New York City

Supporters of embattled Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff rallied outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, Friday, as the Brazilian leader delivered a speech inside.

Protesters held signs condemning the impeachment proceedings against Rousseff with messages including: "Democracy in Brazil under attack" and "Dilma is my president." A small group of counter-protesters also held a rally against Rousseff. Police kept both groups separated and no incidents were reported.

On Sunday, April 17, two-thirds of the 513 delegates in Brazil's lower chamber voted in favour of impeaching Rousseff. The matter will now be voted upon in the Senate and if the upper house decides Rousseff should stand trial, she could be suspended for 180 days, with Vice President Michel Temer expected to take temporary control of the country. In the event that Rousseff is found guilty by a two-thirds Senate majority, she will be removed from office.
