Several prominent landmarks and buildings around Minneapolis were lit up in purple on Thursday night, in honour of Prince after the 57-year-old artist was found dead at his Paisley Park estate earlier in the day.
Prince, whose full name was Prince Rogers Nelson, was born in Minneapolis in 1958 and it was in the clubs and bars around the city that he developed his unique style early on in his career. No venue was more synonymous with the Purple One throughout his life than First Avenue, where Prince shot much of his 1984 film Purple Rain, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1985.
In honour of Prince, the owner of First Avenue announced an all-night free party on Thursday evening to celebrate the late artist's legacy.
According to local police, Prince was discovered 'unresponsive' at his Paisley Park recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota, and pronounced dead at 10:07 local time (14:07 GMT). An investigation has been launched into the exact circumstances of his death and an autopsy will be performed at the Midwest regional medical examiner.
