FIFA president Gianni Infantino praised Russian Sports Minister Vitali Mutko and his team for the "fantastic" preparations for the 2018 FIFA World Cup during a special session of the Council of the Federation in Moscow, Wednesday.
"What I have seen until now already in this preparation for the World Cup is simply fantastic. I can only congratulate Mr. Vitali Mutko and his team, Alexei Sorokin [chief of Russia's 2018 World Cup organising committee], the organising committee and all of you for all the great enthusiasm and work you have put into this," Infantino stated.
Commenting on Infantino's appointment as FIFA president, Mutko said: "It is a positive result for Russia in terms of the World Cup preparation works. We supported this candidate from the very beginning. Gianni Infantino is a big professional, pragmatist and a person who has been doing everything to reclaim the authority of FIFA and of course to give back football to FIFA."
The 2018 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place in Russia from June 14 to July 15, 2018. A total of 64 matches will be played in 12 venues located in 11 cities across Russia, with the final being expected to take place in the Luzhniki Stadium.
