Brazil: Scuffles break out ahead of impeachment vote in Brazil's Congress

Brazil, Brasilia

Scuffles broke out between MPs supporting and opposing the potential impeachment procedure for Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff in Brasilia, Sunday, during the preliminary stage of the impeachment session at the National Congress of Brazil.

Members of the lower house stood up from their seats and began pushing and shoving as supporters of Rousseff chanted "there won't be a coup." Some members of the house were draped in Brazilian flags.

President of the Brazilian Congress Eduardo Cunha called for calm, stating "Your honour needs to respect the plenary, it's not screaming how you will win" in response to the scuffles.

The lower house of the National Congress of Brazil, the Chamber of Deputies, is expected to vote on the impeachment process against the Brazilian President on Sunday. If two-thirds of the 513 delegates in the lower chamber vote in favour of the impeachment, the matter will then be sent to the Senate, who can decide whether or not to put Rousseff on trial.
