A chess set which dates back to the Persian Samanid Empire went on show at Sotheby's in London, Friday, ahead of the Arts of the Islamic World auction scheduled later this month, where it is expected to fetch up to £50,000 (€63,000).

Commenting on the ancient set, director and head of auction sales for Sotheby's Middle Eastern department, Benedict Carter said "It is extremely rare to find one even as complete as this." He went on to highlight that other sets on show at the auction include one which dates back to the Egyptian Fatimid Caliphate.

The set that was put together by the chess grandmaster Lothar Schmid, who famously refereed the 'Cold War clash' final between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky in 1972. Over a period of 70 years, Schmid toured the world collecting ancient pieces and amounting collections some of which date back to the earliest known origins of the game.

The Persian Samanid Empire existed around modern-day Iran, Afghanistan and central Asia over 1,000 years ago. Its capital was based in Samarkand and later moved to Bukhara, with its main language being Farsi (Persian).
