Russia: Putin talks Panama Papers, Syria conflict, next US pres.

Russian Federation, Moscow
April 14, 2016 at 16:46 GMT +00:00 · Published

After answering questions from the Russian public for well over three hours, President Vladimir Putin stepped in front of the press to comment on various topics including Barack Obama's presidency, the Panama Papers and the Syrian conflict, in Moscow on Thursday.

Putin praised Obama as a “a very responsible man” who “works hard"; however he refused to evaluate the US president's work, since he has to be judged by the American people, Putin stated. "When the new president enters office, we will continue working with him or her," he added.

Commenting on the conflict in Syria, the Russian leader said “the Kurds fight selflessly without sparing themselves," adding that Kurdish units are a valuable asset in the fight against terrorism, "in the Middle East, and in Syria in particular."

Putin also responded to the Panama Papers leak, calling it "targeted" but saying "we don’t think this is a plot."

Earlier in the day Putin faced the Russian public in a live broadcast, where he responded to dozens of questions that were selected out of nearly two million, submitted online and over the phone.

Putin's 'Direct Line' has become a well-established tradition throughout the years of his presidency. The event generally focuses on domestic affairs, with Putin reporting on the government's achievements while identifying existing issues. Putin's answers also touch upon international issues affecting Russia.
