Iranian President Hassan Rouhani welcomed Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi to the Saadabad cultural and historical complex in Tehran, Tuesday, with full military honours. Renzi is the first European Union leader to visit Iran's capital since the Iranian nuclear deal was signed in April last year.

The Italian delegation includes several ministers and some 250 representatives from political and business groups.

Rouhani visited Italy in January this year for the first time since the sanctions on Iran were lifted. It was also the first time an Iranian president has travelled to Europe in 16 years.

The sanctions placed on Iran were lifted on January 16, 2016, after the United Nations confirmed that Tehran had fulfilled its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The JCPOA, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, is an agreement signed in Vienna on July 14, 2015, between Iran and the United States, UK, Russia, China and Germany. The deal imposes limits on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for the removal of sanctions against Iran.
