Russia: Stavropol situation 'under control,' counter-terror op launched

Special security measures are in place after a police station came under attack in the Stavropol territory on Monday, Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee has said. Spokesperson Vadim Druzhinin said from Moscow that the situation in the Novoselitsky district "is under control."

Contradictory reports have emerged stating that there were either three or four attackers; with one shot dead by officers and the rest reportedly dying after detonating suicide belts at the police station.

Druzhinin confirmed that the blasts occurred at 10:10 and shortly afterwards, "police, the Federal Security Service and Emergencies Ministry" arrived at the scene. However, he said, "there are no reports of injured police officers."

The spokesperson reported that "currently we are working on the identification of all the suspects and their accomplices, who were involved in detonating the explosive devices." He went on to state that multiple agencies are coordinating their work at the scene of the blast.

Eyewitnesses earlier reported hearing five blasts and gun fire from automatic weapons and pistols near the station.

The police department building remains cordoned-off and locals have been advised to stay at home amid concerns there could be explosives planted in the area. Military and security units including armoured vehicles and helicopters were deployed in case of further attacks and to secure the area for investigators.
