Malta: Opposition leader Busuttil leads mass protest for PM Muscat's resignation

Malta, Valletta
April 10, 2016 at 20:32 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and a number of other officials in Valletta, Sunday, as they gathered in front of the prime minister's office to protest against corruption.

The demonstration, led by opposition leader Busuttil, was also directed against Muscat's Chief of Staff Keith Schrembi and the Minister of Energy and Health Konrad Mizzi, who both were mentioned in the Panama Papers leak. Schrembi and Mizzi are alleged to have set up offshore trusts in New Zealand that were linked to a secret bank account in Dubai, as well as to companies in Panama through Mossack Fonseca. If the allegations are true, Mizzi and Schrembi must have received Muscat's blessings for their acts, Busuttil claims.

The protest comes after the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and various news organisations leaked the so-called Panama Papers, a large amount of data exposing widespread international corruption and tax evasion. According to Suddeutsche Zeitung, the data "provides rare insights into a world that can only exist in the shadows. It proves how a global industry led by major banks, legal firms, and asset management companies secretly manages the estates of the world's rich and famous: from politicians, FIFA officials, fraudsters and drug smugglers, to celebrities and professional athletes."

The data provided in the leak centres around the activities of Mossack Fonseca over a period from the 1970s until spring 2016. There is believed to be an estimated 11.5 million documents in the Panama Papers, making it the largest leak of its kind. The information provided in the leak purportedly exposes the offshore holdings of 12 current and former world leaders as well as unveiling data on the financial activities of 128 other politicians and public officials from a number of countries.
