Venezuela: 1000s rally behind Maduro against 'Criminal Amnesty' law

Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro led a protest march in Caracas, Thursday, against an Amnesty law approved by the opposition-led National Assembly that would ensure legal impunity for many criminal opponents of the socialist government.

Protesters demonstrated demanding that Maduro reject the law which could free dozens of jailed opposition leaders, including those responsible for crimes during the 2002 coup against former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, and for post-election violence in 2013.

Maduro emphasised that the amnesty law, which would forgive "right-wing murderers" was met with "rejection and disgust" by the people. The law would see many individuals charged of serious crimes released, including opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, currently serving a 13-year sentence for inciting attacks that left 43 people dead and over 800 wounded in 2014.

The Venezuelan President, who cannot veto the law, has promised to send the law to Venezuela's Supreme Court, where it is possible that it could be struck down.
